 | 09:13 pm - The Fish Whisperer I went camping with my sister last night--our two boys plus her two kids. So this morning, do any of the kids catch a fish when we go fishing? Of course not, but my sister does. After that experience, the cousins were pretty much decided that they had seen enough fishing and were ready to go home.

 | 08:31 am - Trying to Cope Well, it's been a lonely several days here with krikketgirl out of the country. It's taken a lot of effort and ingenuity to keep from starving and to keep the kids from hurting themselves. What follows is a short photo essay on trying to make dinner. ( Due to the graphic nature of this content, it is behind a cut )

 | 08:44 pm - Green Hill Drive In, Morgantown, Indiana One warm Sunday afternoon in April, our family stopped at the Green Hill Drive In, which is on the eastern edge of Morgantown, Indiana, on the south side of State Road 252/135. We had driven past it many times, but the last couple of times we have been in the area, we have made a point to stop.

 | 08:28 am - Madison State Road I completed posting the trip album for a trip my wife and I took last month from Indianapolis to Madison Indiana. The path we took was along a route that used to be called the "Madison State Road" and was completed in 1824.
There are some interesting pictures in there (along with some maybe not so interesting, except to me), that you may enjoy.

 | 08:01 am - A legume makes a "leg" out of "u" and "me" I'm glad our schedule worked out so that we could go to sirvalence's awesome Game-a-thon this past weekend. It was great to play games, laugh and enjoy good company. Of course, drives_a_mini's clue "_______ Me Elmo" and the reaction alone would have been enough, but there were many clever clues given by all while we played "25 Words Or Less".

 | 09:43 pm - The Day the TV Crew Visited It's hard to express how relieved I am that the Across Indiana camera crew has pulled out of our driveway. I am worn out. The three of them were in the house for just under three hours. I wasn't particularly nervous or anything, but it's just a little strange to have three guys, lights and tripods in our tiny living room.
And they filmed me grilling a Reuben sandwich which turned out to be about the worst Reuben ever. My wife had bought this gorgeous Pepperidge Farm Deli Swirl bread, but the bread did nothing but stick to the cast iron skillet. I buttered up the bread and sat it there, and it immediately adhered--this never happens with other rye or wheat bread. And the corned beef--Katherine had some Eckrich Corned Beef sliced into thick slices at our Kroger store--it was the toughest corned beef I had ever eaten. I made two sandwiches, and on each one, one of the sides of the sandwich completely stuck to the skillet and fell all apart. But I was able to get the sandwiches sitting on plates with the better side up, so at least they will hopefully look good on camera. We both took bites of them and they were horrible. We ended up throwing them out. But that part will hopefully end up on the cutting room floor...
They took some "B roll" footage of the boys, of our family eating dinner, and of me using our computer (picture close-ups of my hand scrolling a mouse wheel while covering up the "Dell" logo), and a scene of me walking up our front steps at night with the house illuminated by huge spotlights.
They also did a several minute interview with me, asking me erudite questions about Reubens and me answering with all of the seriousness that I could muster. And of course there was the little "domestic scene" of Katherine and I opting for a Reuben instead of dessert. I delivered the line that the producer had been itching to put in the story since he wants to create some angle of me as the "Reubenator": "I'll be back..."
Who knows what they'll create from this footage and the footage at the restaurant last week. They have 4 minutes to fit it all into. Current air date is expected to be the end of January.

 | 10:14 pm - Reuben Fame Yesterday a camera crew from Across Indiana came along and shot some footage during our Reuben Tuesday at the Tie Dye Grill. They interviewed at least five of the my compatriots. They're supposed to come to the house next week and interview me and my family. Scott, the producer, had joined our group earlier this year for a Reuben--little did I know his presence would turn into our group being broadcast throughout Indiana in early 2008. Once the episode is available on-line (they offer streaming video), I'll post a link.

 | 08:51 am - The Hobbit I gave Steven, our 10-year-old, my copy of The Hobbit last night to read. He read more than half of the book last night--he says he really likes it. I kind of thought he would since that's about the age I was when I read it. I am amazed at how fast my son can read. He must have gotten that from his mom. Not that I'm a slow reader, but I can't compare to krikketgirl.

 | 09:33 pm - The office feels empty...
After seven years of working with Carl ( sirvalence), he is moving on to a new job.
Over the past seven years, Carl has become my best friend (besides krikketgirl, of course). We have had so many shared experiences together, both at work and away. We have been to eat Reuben sandwiches and Nachos Fajita together, we have been on the NITE Ride together, we took a business trip to Nevada and California together--for that matter were in an auto accident together... Needless to say, he's been a big influence on my life.
I've sat in the same room with him day after day for so long--someone who can complete my sentences and lets me complete his. Carl is always someone quick to give a smile and encouragement. He can be trusted with anything you might give to him: thoughts, design specifications, friendship, it didn't matter. He always went out of his way to try to do whatever crazy thing I might ask him to do. He might have complained sometimes, but I knew I could always count on him to be there in many ways.
While I don't believe our friendship is over, at all, it's still a time for me to think back and appreciate the blessing of being able to have such a marvelous friend for so long. Here's to Carl's success at his new job and hoping that he brings as much joy to the new people that he will meet. Carl, I hope to work with you again someday. Current Mood: contemplative

 | 11:01 am - Free Home Theater System Yesterday afternoon, I took a walk around our office building parking lot with my friends Dan and Az. As we were walking along, these two guys in a pickup truck with Michigan plates pulled up and the driver shouts to us, "Hey, you guys want a free home theater system?" and hands Az a document envelope of some sort.
The guy gets out of his truck and starts jumping up in the air kind of like a crazy person, saying over and over again, "this is so awesome!" He said that he is an independent delivery company for these things (he had 10 boxes that comprised about two home theater systems in the bed of his truck). First, he said that he had "won" them, and we could have them for free; then he said that they were "extras" and that returning them back where he got them, they would just be thrown out, and that we should "make him an offer" for them. Then he talked about how there wasn't anywhere on this side of town where he could stash them to come back for them later.
The way this guy was jumping up and down and his level of excitement pretty much convinced us that this character was on something more stimulating than coffee. We politely declined his offer, but it was a pretty interesting encounter. Kind of felt like we were on some reality TV show or something.

 | 10:15 pm - Carmel Magazine Article This month, our Reuben Tuesday group is featured in Carmel Magazine. I have scanned in the pages from their January 2007 magazine and posted them on our new "Media Coverage" page:
http://rowlandweb.com/reuben/media.asp
Now everyone can see a good close-up of my hands. My friend sirvalence (Carl) is really the star of the story, since he actually lives in Carmel. We were even mentioned on the cover of the magazine! Much better treatment than Indianapolis Dine gave us last year...
